Diavolo 2014

Sellicks Hill Wines. McLaren Vale. South Australia.

Shiraz 70%, Cabernet Sauvignon 30%

Paul’s notes

2014 Has brought us the best Diavolo so far and I’m loving it!

The Shiraz is from my in-laws’ vineyard which I helped build and now work full-time. This vineyard blesses us with outstanding Shiraz which on its own shows incredible balance and lacks in nothing. Right from the abundant and silky fruit to the elongated and fine tannins, the Shiraz from the Piombo vineyard in Sellicks (McLaren Vale) is a piece of work all its own.

The Cabernet components come from one of our neighbours, the lovely and absolutely wine obsessed Mat Brown from his Paeroa vineyard at Sellicks Hill. Mat is a master grower, as well as a great guy, who produces cabernet that delivers bright fruit with spice and lovely tight cabernet tannins: very smart.

Put all these components together and you have Diavolo: rich, yet not over- powering, elegant, yet no pushover. Balanced to the nth degree and very clever at shape shifting when opened up to some air.

Try stopping at one….

I’m extremely happy with what 2014 has given me to work with and am sure that this wine will only improve with proper cellaring and patience. Although it may be difficult to wait as it drinks beautifully now.

“Dark chocolate, aniseed, spice and lovely long finishing tannins. Decant this Devil of a wine and enjoy it over an extended dinner!”

History

Some have wineries, but here at Sellicks Hill, we have “The Shed”. The Shed is where it all began and where it all still happens.

When Paul first met his wife to be, Angela, it wasn’t long before he realised how important a role wine was in the life of his Italian born father-in-law to be, Modestino Piombo’s life.

Before too long Paul found himself riding shot-gun in Modestino (Steve’s) HZ Kingswood ute, on their way to Mclaren Vale to pick grenache that was to be brought back to surburban Adelaide to be turned into wine.

These antics took place in Steves work Shed and it is from there the winemaking duo were to spark a great relationship both with each other but also with Grapes, Wine and Sheds.

Jump forward to today.
After purchasing the property at Sellicks Hill in Mclaren vale, that the Piombo family turned into a vineyard, it didn’t take the two wine nuts long to turn one of the Sheds into a micro Winery.

“The Shed” was born. Once the produce in the shed was found to be of excellent quality it wasn’t long before every mate, wine nut and general drunkard were to come calling. Tasting from barrel to barrel whilst pontificating over the merits of its contents became a regular event with visitors quite regularly finding themselves in a time-warp that would eat away hours with only the dreaded phone call from the missus bringing the ritual to an end.

Rødvin. Australien.
