Noter fra vinmageren

Bright with intense deep, ruby/purple hues. This wine exhibits clean, lifted aromas and the succulent palate has ample fruit flavours in addition to characters of mint enhanced by balanced acid and careful maturation in medium toasted, all new French oak barriques. The fruit for this outstanding wine is sourced from the Morton vineyard in the cool climate region of Mt. Compass and has to date received a total of one Trophy and 14 Gold medals.

Extreme Summer temperatures in 2009 led us to source Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from the cooler climate of Mt Compass in the Southern Fleurieu Wine Region, 20 minutes south of McLaren Vale. The result is an elegant, lower alcohol dry red wine displaying outstanding varietal and mint characters typical of cool climate Cabernet Sauvignon. Matured in New French oak hogsheads for 15 months.

History

Graham Stevens was born to grow grapes and make wine. Living almost his entire life in the McLaren Vale Wine Region, Graham won his first (vine) pruning trophy at the age of 9.

Working on Vineyards and at Wineries in McLaren Vale, while he and his wife saved for their own piece of land, Graham learnt the fine art of quality winemaking. His superior skills soon came to light when Coriole Vineyards was awarded the Bushing Winning Wine in 1974, and again in 1975, when Graham and Marie were able to personally and proudly accept the title of McLaren Vale Bushing King and Queen.

Graham and Marie opened the doors to their own winery, Cambrai Vineyards (later to change its name to Stevens Cambrai Wines), in 1979. The success they enjoyed was evident from the hundreds of awards and trophies that adorned the cellar door walls and rafters. Time has lost track of the exact number of medals and trophies Graham has won, but it runs into many hundreds, including the coveted Dan Murphy Trophy.

In 1985, Graham again won the coveted McLaren Vale Bushing Award, and he and Marie were once again crowned King and Queen; the only winemaker at that time to have made the Bushing winning wine three times.

In 1997, Graham and Marie decided to retire, and sold their winery and vineyard.

Graham was not used to having so much time on his hands, and he purchased a piece of land on the picturesque Ingoldby Road at McLaren Flat to plant vines and keep himself occupied when not fishing off Aldinga Beach. Any local will tell you there is no fish in the gulf, and Graham now agrees. He decided enough was enough, and thus Graham Stevens Wines began a new phase in Graham’s life. In 2005, selling his quality grapes turned to making quality wine with Graham’s daughter Carolyn helping out on weekends and during holidays.

Graham’s daughter Carolyn has been assisting with the family business all her life, but in 2008 made a career move to join Graham permanently in the business, and together they strive for excellence in winemaking, and consumer satisfaction.

Graham Stevens Wines is a true family business. Carolyn’s partner Brian, and their two daughters Sally and Zoe are integral members of the team, and they love getting involved in both the vineyard and the winery.

To date, although only producing very few wines, Graham Stevens Wines has already won more than 50 awards in 2 seasons of showing wines at Australian Wine Shows.

Rødvin. Australien.
