Noter fra vinmageren

Our journey with old vine Grenache continues with the 2016 vintage. Dusty tannins give the wine presence while its perfume dances from olfactory into flavour profile. Lingering aromatics of raspberry, blue cornflowers and dried tangerine are carried across the palate with silty fine-boned tannins and cleansing acidity.
The Grenache captures the rise of energy we feel in spring and autumn – the bookends of winter – as we enjoy that erupting explosion of colour onto our landscape. It’s crimson and all things red berry, the sweetness of wild flowers in a meadow just out of sight, carried to you by the wind.
As the cool weather approaches, gather your kin and hunker down with a buttery, flaky pork pithivier and a bottle of the 2016 Grenache. A wine with story: see where it takes you…

Time in tomb: 10+ years

Fra vinskribenterne

Is it wrong to drink a sample bottle dry? Well, I did. A rare occurrence but my actions are justified here. I could drink a gallon of this – responsibly of course!

Such a beautiful thing. Red berries, red currants, dried red flowers and a tiny dab of fruit sweetness. It’s a ride atop a magic carpet of pleasure. So smooth, so supple. It’s moreish deluxe. It’s the fairground teacup ride for adults. It sways and swerves as one with interest and dripping with pleasure – damn good drinking. Soft spices sneak up on the finish and give a subtle nudge they are there without stealing the limelight. Big love. Run, don’t walk.

Drink now to six years.

Den Sydney’ske vinskribent Mike Bennie beskriver Justin McNamee således: “There’s bits ‘n’ pieces seemingly everywhere, but within the chaos is a magnificent winemaker orchestrating through minimal intervention, some of the Vale’s most exciting wines.”

History

Samuel’s Gorge is a mosaic of dreams, with one principal philosophy, that of place.

Justin McNamee established Samuel’s Gorge in 2003 in a farm shed built in 1853 overlooking the Onkaparinga River National Park located in the Seaview subregion of McLaren Vale. The Samuel’s Gorge label is an impression of the rugged landscape that is viewed from the winery.
A wines’ style is steered by the soil in which the vine grows, the vintage conditions and the imagination of a winemaker. The soils of the region vary dramatically across the McLaren Vale basin that then opens to the coast in the west. Specialising in four key varietals Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvedre and Tempranillo, grapes are strategically sourced from a range of sites and soils in order to achieve great depth and complexity of flavour.

The wines of Samuel’s Gorge are hand crafted wines that are distinctly Australian with reference to the old world for texture, complexity and harmony. Having great patience, the fermentations of each parcel of fruit are long and slow in open slate fermenters which date back 100 years. The grapes are pressed off using traditional basket press methods with the wines being transferred to oak to mature. These many components are then blended together to achieve harmony within each of the Samuel’s Gorge wines.

The wines of Samuel’s Gorge represent the personality of the maker and are driven by their nose, texture, silkiness and intrigue. There is a common rustic nature supporting the fruit drive and natural richness in all three wines. Ultimately we present wines that are great to drink and yet have structural support to ensure that they cellar well.

Rødvin. Australien.
