Grenache 2014

Samuel’s Gorge. McLaren Vale. South Australia.

100 % Grenache

Explosive crimson fruit compote studded with cardamom, clove, cinnamon quill and black pepper.  Savour the graceful glide across the palate and transcend yourself to the steamy spice markets of British India.

The primary focus of our Grenache hails from the North Easterly facing wing of the valley we call Blewitt Springs. It’s a sheltered corner within our region that delights in the morning sun and is well protected from the extremes of summer. It’s the subtle differences of aspect and elevation, harshness of the geology, the symbiotic relationship between aromas of flora on ancient soils and the brightness of the light. The image of the rising standard of the yucca plant peppering the untamed Australian landscape. We are inspired by the unmistakeable signature of our province and its unique expression in Grenache.

Grace and beauty in the detail with commanding charisma. The flavours are strongly linked to the aromas: vibrant, bright red cherry, zesty twist of a tangelo rind and piquant quince paste shaded with dried oregano and wisps of white pepper. It embraces the rusticity of ancient earth and a signature Vale flint: subtle hints of the sea in delicate ribbons of nori, the savoury umami of white miso. Bright acids and texturally intriguing fine, chalky tannins give amazing line and length. We have had quite a journey with the Old Vine Grenache in our region for well over a hundred years and for me more recently over the last fifteen or so. Every year it becomes more engaging to make and polarising to taste. Find yourself lost in the aromatic charm of Grenache – transported back to our vista on the hill.

Exotic spices, potpourri, ripe raspberry, cherry, subtle earthiness, poached rhubarb etc. etc. Medium to full bodied, deep fruited, ripe fleshy and fine chalky tannin, perfect acidity, richness and sweet herb mouth-perfume, satisfying length and a spicy succulent ripe fresh raspberry aftertaste. If you could say a wine has ‘got its groove on’, then here’s exhibit a). Great wine.

Den Sydney’ske vinskribent Mike Bennie beskriver Justin McNamee således: “There’s bits ‘n’ pieces seemingly everywhere, but within the chaos is a magnificent winemaker orchestrating through minimal intervention, some of the Vale’s most exciting wines.”

History

Samuel’s Gorge is a mosaic of dreams, with one principal philosophy, that of place.

Justin McNamee established Samuel’s Gorge in 2003 in a farm shed built in 1853 overlooking the Onkaparinga River National Park located in the Seaview subregion of McLaren Vale. The Samuel’s Gorge label is an impression of the rugged landscape that is viewed from the winery.
A wines’ style is steered by the soil in which the vine grows, the vintage conditions and the imagination of a winemaker. The soils of the region vary dramatically across the McLaren Vale basin that then opens to the coast in the west. Specialising in four key varietals Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvedre and Tempranillo, grapes are strategically sourced from a range of sites and soils in order to achieve great depth and complexity of flavour.

The wines of Samuel’s Gorge are hand crafted wines that are distinctly Australian with reference to the old world for texture, complexity and harmony. Having great patience, the fermentations of each parcel of fruit are long and slow in open slate fermenters which date back 100 years. The grapes are pressed off using traditional basket press methods with the wines being transferred to oak to mature. These many components are then blended together to achieve harmony within each of the Samuel’s Gorge wines.

The wines of Samuel’s Gorge represent the personality of the maker and are driven by their nose, texture, silkiness and intrigue. There is a common rustic nature supporting the fruit drive and natural richness in all three wines. Ultimately we present wines that are great to drink and yet have structural support to ensure that they cellar well.

Rødvin. Australien.
